A Brief History

Esigodini was built in 1965/66 by Barry Ellis on a small plot of land that he had bravely bought. Not knowing exactly where the property was for a short time. Weekend after weekend, Barry would bring his family up to the plot to stay in tents whilst the cottage was built. In the early days of Esigodini, power lines had not yet been installed so light was created by gas lamps that hung on the wall, which are still there to this day! In the June of 2000, Esigodini and the surrounding area was devastated by a terrible fire which burnt two of the original rondavels down. Since then a new building has been built, along with the bonfire and braai facilities which are now present. Over the past 50 years, much has changed at the cottage, and it has stayed in the Ellis family who still take care of the little piece of heaven to this day! Please look at the photos below

ABOUT

Esigodini is a zulu word which means "place in the valley" is a self-catering holiday home placed in the Southern Drakensberg just 35 km from Underberg, the cottage is perfect for families and friends alike to enjoy a relaxing time away in the mountains. In summer one can enjoy a tube ride down the Umzimkhulu river and a braai under the stars, whilst in winter they could enjoy a glass of red wine next to a roaring fire. The stone cottage is covered in its signature ivy, which changes colour depending on the season you visit. 

Our friendly caretakers are on site and will provide housekeeping services to you and your company, while you enjoy the tranquility of the mountains. The cottage is fully equipped and all that needs to be taken up with you is food, towels and charcoal for your braais.
